About São Tomé and Príncipe

Nestled in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa, São Tomé and Príncipe is a country that boasts an abundance of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture, making it a true hidden gem. This small island nation, composed of two main islands—São Tomé and Príncipe—and several smaller isles, is the second-smallest African country by population. Despite its size, it offers a wealth of experiences for all who visit or wish to learn about its unique charm.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

The cultural tapestry of São Tomé and Príncipe is as diverse as its natural landscape. The country's history is a blend of African, Portuguese, and Creole influences, reflected in its architecture, language, and customs. São Toméan cuisine is a delicious testament to this cultural fusion, offering an array of flavors that range from tropical fruits to savory seafood dishes, seasoned with spices grown on the islands.

A Rich Tapestry of Biodiversity

São Tomé and Príncipe is renowned for its dense rainforests, which are home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, much of which is endemic to the islands. The nation's commitment to conservation is evident in the Obo National Park, which covers a significant portion of São Tomé and is a haven for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and eco-tourists. The islands’ unique ecosystems support a variety of species, from the smallest orchids to the majestic São Tomé fiscal, a bird found nowhere else on Earth.

Sustainable Development and Community Initiatives

São Tomé and Príncipe faces the challenge of balancing economic development with environmental conservation. The country has made strides in promoting sustainable tourism, agriculture, and fishing practices, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of its natural or cultural heritage. Local NGOs, like Lagalaga, play a crucial role in this endeavor, working tirelessly to improve the lives of São Toméans by fostering

SOME OF OUR PROJECTS ON THE GROUND

End to the Abuse of Poor Elderly

In São Tomé and Príncipe, a deeply troubling issue has been festering within communities, rooted in superstition and fear. There exists a pervasive belief that some poor elderly individuals many of which with poor mental health are witches, possessing malevolent powers. This accusation, often a reflection of societal and economic frustrations, leads to their marginalization, abuse, and in extreme cases, violence that can be fatal.

Domestic violence against women

In São Tomé and Príncipe, as in many parts of the world, domestic violence against women is a critical issue that demands urgent attention and action. This form of violence is a profound violation of human rights, deeply rooted in unequal power dynamics between genders, societal norms that perpetuate discrimination against women, and a culture of silence and stigma surrounding victims.

Under Age pregnancy

The issue of underage pregnancy in São Tomé and Príncipe is a pressing concern that has significant implications for the health, well-being, and future prospects of adolescent girls. Despite efforts to improve access to education and reproductive health services, underage pregnancy remains a prevalent issue in the country.
